Slow Sundays

By Roger Colins

Sundays are quite accurate most of the time. For years I've always woken up, had a peek out the window and am greeted by blue skies and shiny weather, no matter the latitude or climate. Today's Sunday is no different.

I also tend to observe there is almost never, any news developments to speak of on a Sunday. As of Yesterday 11th December 2014, a Saturday, Ariel Sharon passed away and another politician, Hassan al-Droui shot dead in Sirte, Libya. The latter was reported at around 4am local time, Sunday the 12th though I suspect both these top stories on the bbc website happened yesterday.

So why doesn't anything happen on Sundays?

Most people are off, aren't they? By the time New Zealand has settled in for the evening, it is still Saturday in Los Angeles. We can already cut that number in half. Schools close but services and transport don't get any days off. Some supermarkets and restaurants stay open, hotels can't kick their guests out for a day, Chinese and Indians still open shop. The priesthood certainly has to get up and go to work and as we all know, the media never stops. The majority of the population are of course blue collar. The nine to fivers are doing the most hazardous work during the week so it could be that most people, are indeed at home cooking up lunch.

Even if most people do still go to work, the seventh day still sits in the back of the head as a day off and subsequently may lighten everyone's mood. We all need rest and relaxation on a regular basis so for those that are in the office, perhaps they are working a little slower, taking a little more time and catch up on correspondences instead of going full steam ahead as they will be the next day.

As to why it's always sunny could be down to sheer coincidence. It could just be me or, it could be symbiotic. Like it or not, we're all interconnected with everything else, the world solid all the way through so if the whole world is taking a respite, enjoying some TV, playing with the kids or just having a lie in, then perhaps, the weather reacts accordingly. Feeling gloomy can certainly be a reflection thanks to gloomy weather. Could it be possible our mood can effect the weather?

Without accusing the rest of the week of chaotic insanity, Sunday certainly has it's place. Whatever the reason for lack of news stories to read and that extra dash of good weather, even if it be something so coincidental that it just seems that way to me, Sunday is definitely a friend to us all.
